Sherborne Old Castle

Sherborne Old CastleSherborne Old Castle was built in the 12th Century by Roger de Caen a Bishop of Salisbury.

Sir Walter Raleigh owned the castle in 1592 and Sir John Digby later purchased the castle in 1617. During the civil war of 1645 the castle was sieged and partially destroyed. The Digby family later transformed the ruins into an attractive feature of their landscaped gardens, at Sherborne New Castle (just across the lake) and later donated it to the nation. The English Heritage care for the castle today and open it for public viewing.
