Tolpuddle
Tolpuddle village Dorchester Dorset attraction

The village of Tolpuddle is famous for the “Tolpuddle Martyrs” a united group of 19th century agricultural labourers.

The labourers swore an oath (effectively making a kind of trade union), which got them into trouble with the law. They were arrested, found guilty and subsequently transported to Australia. They later became heroes and were released.

Tolpuddle contains a monument in their honour and a local museum. The village is a lovely quiet place, with beautiful cottages lining the streets. A festival is also scheduled here in July.
